IWRBR Navigating Rising Costs: A Conversation on Inflation’s Impact on Nonprofits

I Would Rather Be Reading

As a nonprofit that’s been nurturing the love for reading and providing enriching opportunities in underserved neighborhoods for six years, we’re no strangers to challenges. Our mission has always been clear: to offer our programs free of charge to ensure every child, regardless of background, has an equal shot at success. But lately, there’s been a new hurdle on the horizon—one that’s affecting many nonprofits like ours: inflation.

You might be wondering, “How does inflation affect a nonprofit?” After all, we don’t operate like a business, selling products for profit. But inflation doesn’t discriminate. It raises the cost of everything, from the literary materials we provide to the snacks at our summer camps. When prices go up, our budget feels the squeeze.

Let’s talk about our budget for a moment. We rely heavily on donations and grants to fund our programs. Every dollar is precious and meticulously planned. But with the rising costs of goods and services, we find ourselves having to stretch those dollars even further. It’s like trying to make a single slice of cake feed a room full of hungry kids—everyone gets less, and it’s never quite enough.

Fundraising, too, has become more challenging. Many of our generous supporters are feeling the pinch in their own pockets. When household budgets tighten, charitable giving is often one of the first things to be cut. This means we have to work even harder to inspire donations, often needing to come up with more creative and compelling ways to show the impact of every contribution.

Then there’s the delivery of our services. Our programs are designed to be as enriching as possible, from providing high-quality books to organizing engaging activities that foster a love for learning. But with the cost of supplies and transportation on the rise, we’re faced with tough decisions. Do we reduce the number of books we give out? Cut back on activities? These are not choices we take lightly because each one impacts the very children we aim to uplift.

Yet, amidst these challenges, there’s a silver lining: the strength and resilience of our community. We’ve seen parents, volunteers, and local businesses step up in extraordinary ways. Whether it’s donating materials, offering their time, or helping us find cost-effective solutions, their support reminds us that our mission is a shared one. Together, we can weather this storm.

We’re also leaning into innovation. Exploring digital resources, partnering with other organizations to share costs, and continuously seeking new funding opportunities are just a few ways we’re adapting. Inflation may test us, but it also pushes us to be more resourceful and resilient.

In these times, your support matters more than ever. Every donation, every volunteer hour, and every word of encouragement helps us continue to provide free, high-quality programs to the children who need them most. Let’s keep this conversation going and work together to ensure that no child’s passion for education and elevation is diminished by rising costs. After all, our community’s future is in their hands—and in ours.
