Empowering Student Voice and Choice: Incorporating SEL into Classroom Practices

At I Would Rather Be Reading, we believe that literacy education is about more than just reading and writing—it's about nurturing the whole child. One of the most impactful ways we do this is by incorporating Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) into our classroom practices, empowering students to use their voices and make meaningful choices in their learning journeys.

SEL is the foundation for creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment where students feel valued and understood. By embedding SEL into our curriculum, we help students develop critical skills like self-awareness, empathy, and responsible decision-making. This approach not only enhances academic performance but also fosters resilience and a strong sense of self-worth.

Our Educate & Elevate program is a prime example of how SEL and student choice go hand in hand. Through activities that encourage self-expression and collaborative problem-solving, students learn to advocate for their needs and explore their interests in a safe space. By offering choices in reading materials and projects, we allow students to take ownership of their learning, which boosts engagement and motivation.

Research shows that when students feel their voices are heard, they are more likely to invest in their education and persist through challenges. This aligns with our commitment to trauma-responsive care, as we recognize that many of our students face unique obstacles that can affect their learning. By prioritizing SEL, we create an environment where every student can thrive academically and emotionally.

At I Would Rather Be Reading, we are dedicated to fostering equitable access to literacy support that addresses the whole child. By empowering student voice and choice, we ensure that our classrooms are not just places of learning, but also spaces of growth, resilience, and empowerment. Together, we can help every child unlock their full potential.
